AIC alum John Gibbons, first Black U.S. Marshal for Massachusetts, announces retirement

John Gibbons, an American International College graduate who went on to a distinguished 30-year career with the Massachusetts State Police before becoming the first Black U.S. marshal for the state of Massachusetts, appointed by President Barack Obama, is retiring after 11 years on the job. A New Jersey native, Gibbons came to Springfield to attend American International College. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1978 and a master’s degree in criminal justice a year later. He retained ties to AIC, receiving an honorary doctorate in 2011, and, more recently, a doctorate in 2019 through AIC’s education, leadership and supervision program.
